Overview

Due to health concerns related to coronavirus (COVID-19), the Family and Community Engagement Institutes scheduled for April 20-21 (Staunton) and April 23-24 (Williamsburg) have been canceled. All lodging has also been canceled for these institutes.

The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the Family and Community Engagement Institute for federal program coordinators and other key instructional staff supporting programs under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).   The intended audience for the proposed institute is a team of local educational agency (LEA) school and division leaders, including representatives from special education and Parent Resource Centers who have not previously attended this institute.  Key points about the institute are below.

  • A team led by Ron Mirr, will provide a two day institute on building capacity for family engagement.
  • Sessions will explore such topics as defining family engagement, repurposing family engagement for mainstream populations and students with disabilities, motivating all parents to participate, and what parents can do to support learning for all students.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to begin working collaboratively in teams to develop plans for effective family and community engagement.
  • The institute will be held in two regional locations.
