Overview

The proposed symposium “Mass Incarceration, Communities, and Families” represents a transdisciplinary and inclusive effort to highlight the scope, impact, and response to widespread imprisonment in Virginia.  We seek to highlight university research on this critical topic, policy initiatives and responses, and activism aimed at empowering justice involved individuals, their families, and affected communities. We broadly apply a social justice lens that views mass imprisonment as a systematic contributor of racial, social, economic, health and family inequality.
