We look forward to welcoming you to Blacksburg for Virginia Tech’s 29th annual Civil War Weekend. Combining expert speakers, the comforts of the Inn at Virginia Tech, and the incomparable camaraderie of the Hokie Nation, it’s a marvelous way to learn about fresh perspectives on Civil War history.
Nine expert speakers will explore what Americans needed in order to wage war. At the most basic level, warfare demanded a steady supply of men, weapons, and ammunition. Soldiers also required food, clothing, and transportation, including horses and mules in the millions. But those basic physical requirements were only the start. For soldiers and the people they left at home, war was a wrenching emotional trial. We’ll learn how men and women used music to cope with the hardships of war, how they shared information, how they used photographs and letters to stay connected with loved ones - and more besides.
You can also join us for an optional two-night field trip to the Harpers Ferry-Antietam region.
Whether you’re a lifelong Civil War buff or just looking for a fun opportunity to learn more, there’s no better way to spend a few days in March. We look forward to seeing you in Blacksburg.
