100624 - Fundamentals of Construction Project Management

Overview

As future managers within the construction industry, employees need to understand fundamental theories that provide a basis for practices within the industry.  This course covers the fundamentals of construction management theory and applies them to multiple divisions of work, emphasizing a practical application for built environment professionals. 

Learners will develop a detailed understanding of fundamentals that form the basis of a career in construction management, including: planning, estimating, and scheduling as they relate to quantity take-off, cost management, scheduling and resource management in support of real construction projects.

This course uses lectures, videos, instructor one-on-one and site visits to give professionals an applied perspective of the industry they have chosen to enter.  

Having successful completed this course, you will be able to: 

1. Understand the phases of construction project management and appropriate methods; 
2. Define project activities, including: production, procurement, administrative and milestones. Activities will range from pre-construction planning to project close-out. 
3. Analyze drawing document details and define relevant items for construction project management. 
4. Apply estimating skills based on quality, quantity and cost of materials for a sample project or one of their choosing. 
5. Apply scheduling activities and demonstrate logic (i.e. precedence of diagramming method or PDM) necessary for completion of the sample construction project. Apply cost-loading schedules. 
6. Communicate project goals to a client/homeowner.

The course will consist of 1.5 hour sessions at the Home Building Association of Richmond as well as 3 hours of out-of-class assignments per week.  The following topics will be presented starting May 6, 2024 and follow the below schedule with each session running from 4:30-6:00pm:  

May 20 - Planning vs. Scheduling and Activity Definition; 
June 3 - Drawing Analysis and Intro to Quantity Take-offs; 
June 10 - Detailed QTOs; 
June 17 - Site Visit in the Richmond Area; 
June 24 - Scheduling; 
July 1 - Communication 
*No Class on May 27 - Memorial Day
