Description

Virginia has a growing number of recently-arrived English Learners (EL), often referred to as newcomers, who require intensive EL support. Some newcomers also arrive with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE), including many with literacy and numeracy gaps and social emotional needs.  These needs are due to migration, war, limited home country educational resources, as well as cultural and economic factors.  Participants will explore the needs of newcomers and understand elements of effective program design. This one-day training will provide school leadership teams with evidence-based instructional and intervention approaches to support newcomer students and SLIFE.

Possible Team Participants: EL teacher and administrator and/or school counselor.

Registration Deadline: The registration deadline for both Hampton and Staunton is August 28, 2019.
