The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Office of Special Education Instructional Services would like to announce the initial pilot of the Journey into Teaching Academy, a yearlong professional development initiative for selected second-year, provisionally licensed, special education teachers.
This yearlong initiative (May 2019 – May 2020) will include a one-day orientation on May 13, 2019, and a four-day academy, July 25-26, 2019 and August 1-2, 2019, at the Virginia Tech Richmond Educational Center. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend other VDOE-sponsored summer academies. In collaboration with VDOE instructional staff, these teachers will gain knowledge and skills in such areas as content knowledge, pedagogical strategies, collaboration/co-teaching techniques, and special education processes and procedures in order to excel in their positions as teachers of students with disabilities. Additional seminars and workshops which will provide coaching and assistance in preparation for the teacher licensure assessment will be announced during the 2019-2020 school term.
