Description

This institute grew out of a number of discussions between representatives of Virginia Tech, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance. Together these organizations saw a need to:

  • Provide a management development program tailored to the needs of transportation construction professionals to help them meet the demands of the Commonwealth's new initiatives in transportation construction.
  • Develop and present such a program as a joint venture between the Department of Transportation and the Road and Transportation Builders' Association in order to improve communication and develop a sense of joint commitment within the industry as a whole.

Designed as a full-time management development program, the institute is geared to meet the needs of transportation construction professionals in middle and upper management positions.

Those delegates who have benefitted most from past institutes are professionals responsible for the completion of projects, not just tasks, and those whose work focuses on communication and leadership in addition to the more technical construction management subjects such as scheduling, estimating, and contract law. Delegates concerned with setting organizational goals and values, and who view their own success as being closely allied to the success of the industry as a whole, have found the institute to be extremely valuable as well.

Special Note: The workload is rigorous and total commitment is expected, yet the sessions are organized to make learning enjoyable and rewarding.

Upon completing this institute, delegates will have improved their ability to:

  • Administer contracts and make decisions.
  • Establish effective teams and maintain strong relationships and high trust levels with and within VDOT and the road building industry.
  • Resolve disputes on-site and complete projects in a more cost- effective and competitive manner.
  • Apply newly acquired leadership, management and interpersonal skills to areas of increased responsibility and authority.
