Virginia Tech, in association with the Virginia Tech School of Education, the Center for Organizational & Technological Advancement (COTA) and the Western Virginia Public Education Consortium (WVPEC), is pleased to present the 15th offering of the Recently Appointed Administrators program.

This program is taught in four cohort sessions and provides multiple, hands-on opportunities structured to hone and expand existing skills and to sharpen decision-making abilities for newly appointed school administrators. The major focus is to explore methods used to transcend challenges faced by educators working to demonstrate leadership effectiveness. Institute “fellows” identify and interact with a mentor coach, expand perspectives through cohort activities, and keep reflective journals. Participation broadens their understanding and application of actions necessary for school improvement.

Completion of a School Leaders Institute program will increase leadership capacity and enhance the ability to use reflection as a powerful leadership skill. Each participant submits an evaluation of workshop discussions, activities, and lectures and completes and submits a reflective journal synopsis based on their total program experience.

RAA is held at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, www.hotelroanoke.com. Each workshop begins at 1 p.m. sharp on Wednesday and ends around noon on Friday. We ask that you plan to arrive no later than 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday to ensure a timely start.

All meals are included in the program, beginning with a refreshment break at noon on Wednesday that is sufficient to call lunch in case you don’t get a chance to stop before your arrival. Group dinners are held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings; and  breakfast and lunch is provided on Thursday and Friday.

Lodging at the Hotel Roanoke is included in your registration fee, and the expectation is that you will stay each Wednesday and Thursday night of the program. Your room is guaranteed to be ready at 4 p.m, and in some cases it may be ready when you arrive. If not the hotel does offer free secure luggage storage.

Self-parking at the Hotel Roanoke is included in the program, you may choose to use the valet parking but that fee is not included. The self-parking at the Hotel is a short walk uphill to the lobby, but the Hotel has a shuttle that runs back and forth that you may utilize. If you have quite a bit of luggage you may drop it off at the front door before parking your car, the bellmen will be happy to keep an eye on it.

Bring a laptop or tablet for use in the workshop. Please familiarize yourself with how to access wireless internet from your device prior to arrival.

Attire is business casual, and it is highly recommended that you bring a light sweater or jacket as the meeting room can sometimes be cool.

The program manager, Robyn Smyth, will contact you soon with additional information.

Refund and Cancellation Policy: Requests for refunds will be honored when received fourteen calendar days prior to the program. A $300 administrative fee will be deducted for cancellations. In the unlikely event that this program is cancelled or postponed due to insufficient enrollments or unforeseen circumstances, the university will fully refund registration fees but cannot be held responsible for any other expenses, including cancellation or change charges assessed by airlines, hotels, travel agencies, or other organizations.
