Overview

Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) is often an overlooked option for today’s entrepreneurs.  ETA can serve as a meaningful way to leverage your entrepreneurial spirit and capacity.  This workshop will highlight the entrepreneurial aims and outcomes associated with ETA, how to get started, target firms/companies, and entrepreneurial financing options.  Upon completion, participants will have a beginning understanding of:

  • What is ETA?
  • Considerations when getting started
  • Target firm features
  • Submitting an offer
  • Negotiating with business owners 
  • Financing ETA
  • Performing due diligence
  • Working with, through, and around business brokers
  • Thinking about the first year

Instructor Dr. Richard Hunt currently serves as Assistant Professor and Director of Doctoral Studies in Management in the Department of Management in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech and serves as Director of Research for the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs at VT.  His teaching interests include strategic management, entrepreneurship, innovation, international business, entrepreneurial finance, and executive education. He is also an accomplished businessman and scholar. He worked as the President and Owner of Risk Removal, Inc., the Vice President of Strategy at StarBand Communications and Director of Planning and Analysis for Pfizer, Inc. before embarking on his higher education career at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado-Boulder. In addition to teaching at the University of Colorado – Boulder, Hunt earned his Ph.D. there.  He also holds an MBA from Stanford University, a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard University and a B.A. from Rice University.
